- Opportunistic screening and early diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in sexually active women in a rural area of the Basque Countrypor Amaia Cuñado en febrero 17, 2026 a las 11:00 am
CONCLUSION: The high prevalence of CT infection in women aged ≤25 years indicates the need to implement screening strategies to prevent the consequences of infection and its transmission.
- Closing the PrEP access gap in Europe: a strategic framework for equity and innovation among difficult-to-reach populationspor Josep M Llibre en febrero 13, 2026 a las 11:00 am
HIV/AIDS remains a global health challenge with significant disparities in access to prevention strategies, particularly among underserved populations. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has proven to be an effective intervention in reducing HIV transmission, yet its uptake remains suboptimal in Europe. This report examines the current state of PrEP implementation in Spain, identifies key barriers to its access and proposes strategies for overcoming these obstacles, with a focus on equity and...

- Assessing the accuracy of a novel algorithm for group B Streptococcus detection in pregnant women and its impact on early-onset neonatal group B streptococcal infectionspor Laura Villa en julio 3, 2025 a las 10:00 am
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of a novel algorithm-designed in accordance with guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Society for Microbiology-for detecting group B Streptococcus (GBS) colonization in pregnant women. Additionally, the study aimed to determine the potential impact of this algorithm on early-onset neonatal group B streptococcal disease (GBS-EOD) cases.
- Genetic characterisation of lymphogranuloma venereum in Spain: a multicentre studypor Paula Salmerón en julio 25, 2024 a las 10:00 am
CONCLUSION: LGV infections were mainly found in MSM living with HIV and with proctitis. The joint analysis of ompA and MLST genetic characterisation techniques showed a high discriminatory capacity. Our findings suggest a cocirculation of L2 and L2b ompA genotypes, and with the inclusion of MLST characterisation, the most prevalent profiles were ompA genotype L2-MLST ST53 and L2-MLST ST58.
- Genome-based epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in Spain: A prospective multicentre studypor P Salmerón en agosto 24, 2023 a las 10:00 am
CONCLUSION: The population of N. gonorrhoeae is quite heterogeneous in Spain. Our results agree with previous data published in Europe, albeit with some differences in distribution between regions. This study describes the circulation of two gonococcal populations with a specific resistance profile and sequence type in a specific geographic area. WGS is an effective tool for epidemiological surveillance of gonococcal infection and detection of resistance genes.
- Phenotypic and Genotypic Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing of Chlamydia trachomatis Isolates from Patients with Persistent or Clinical Treatment Failure in Spainpor Laura Villa en junio 28, 2023 a las 10:00 am
The aim of this multicentre project (seven hospitals across the Spanish National Health Service) was to study the phenotypic and genotypic susceptibility of C. trachomatis to the main antimicrobials used (macrolides, doxycycline, and quinolones) in isolates from patients with clinical treatment failure in whom reinfection had been ruled out. During 2018-2019, 73 clinical isolates were selected. Sixty-nine clinical specimens were inoculated onto confluent McCoy cell monolayers for phenotypic...
- Genetic Characterization of Non-Lymphogranuloma venereum Chlamydia trachomatis Indicates Distinct Infection Transmission Networks in Spainpor Luis Piñeiro en abril 28, 2023 a las 10:00 am
Chlamydia trachomatis infection is an important public health problem. Our objective was to assess the dynamics of the transmission of this infection, analysing the distribution of circulating ompA genotypes and multilocus sequence types of C. trachomatis in Spain as a function of clinical and epidemiological variables. During 2018 and 2019, we genetically characterized C. trachomatis in tertiary hospitals in six areas in Spain (Asturias, Barcelona, Gipuzkoa, Mallorca, Seville and Zaragoza),...
- Survey of diagnostic resources for STI in Spainpor Luis Otero-Guerra en agosto 7, 2021 a las 10:00 am
CONCLUSION: There is great variability in the provision of human and material resources both in the clinics and in the laboratories that attend STIs. In a significant number of centers there are limitations for patient access. Although laboratories have molecular biology technologies, not all of them offer immediate response tests. All laboratories detect N. gonorrhoeae infection by PCR and also by culture, which allows sensitivity testing in all centers.
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae antimicrobial resistance in Spain: a prospective multicentre studypor Paula Salmerón en febrero 11, 2021 a las 11:00 am
CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that NG susceptibility to extended-spectrum cephalosporins remains high in Spain. The azithromycin resistance rate questions the suitability of dual therapy. This study provides data of interest for updating the national treatment guidelines and highlights the need to develop and implement a national sentinel gonococcal antimicrobial susceptibility programme.
- Does Skilled Nursing Facility Trigger Tool used with Global Trigger Tool increase its value for adverse events evaluation?por M D Menéndez-Fraga en enero 29, 2021 a las 11:00 am
CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrates that adding the SNFTT to the GTT did not increase its effectiveness as regards the evaluation of AEs. However, some triggers are better described in SNFTT and now have now been added into the general GTT method in our hospital.

- Long term storage of fastidious bacteria (Neisseria spp. and Haemophilus spp.) with swab preservation at -80 °Cpor Laura Villa en junio 9, 2020 a las 10:00 am
Preservation of strains is important to further studies and characterization; we have shown a technique of long-term preservation of Neisseria spp. and Haemophilus spp. by freezing cotton tip swabs impregnated with fastidious organisms at -80 °C without the addition of cryoprotectants.
- Molecular diagnostic of syphilispor Luis Otero Guerra en marzo 1, 2020 a las 11:00 am
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum with an increasing incidence in Spain and in the rest of the world. Diagnosis is based mainly on serology, since direct diagnosis by dark field microscopy presents difficulties that limit its widespread use. Molecular biology techniques can be a useful tool for diagnosis in primary and secondary syphilis, although not all types of samples show the same behaviour. These techniques are also useful for the...
